Thanksgiving in Indonesia

Oh Fall I wish we hadn't left you in the US.

The past few days I have really been missing Fall.  That time of year when the air gets a bit more crisp and fresh, except for when everyone is outside enjoying a cozy fire and that familiar smell of smoke fills the air.  That time of year when all nature begins to change out of their summer wardrobe in preparation for the coming winter.  That time of year when you can go to the lake at midday and enjoy a day of fishing without being burnt to a crisp by the summer sun.  That time of year when you can walk outside and pick up leaves of all colors and try to piece together the rainbow that seemingly just shattered overhead.  I miss that time of year.

So I have looked for it in Indo where evidence of Fall and Thanksgiving is so very sparse.  There is no crisp fresh air to tell you that it is getting late in the year.  There are no cool nights when people are excited to sit outside and enjoy a fire that fills the air with the comforting aroma of smoke.  There is no way you would get anyone out at midday to go fishing because even the fish are hiding from the midday sun.  Even though there may be rainbows you never find brilliantly colored pieces of them laying around under sparsely clothed trees.

But today!! Today was a day of Thanksgiving, the milemarker that tells us even though we can't feel it or see it, Fall is here.  Even the weather decided to celebrate a little with us as the midday sun gave way to clouds and rain which ever so slightly cooled things off.  Excitement filled the air in anticipation of the guys dorm and girls dorm getting together to share a Thanksgiving dinner.  There is even one little tree that though it stubbornly refuses to give up its leaves still reminds me of what the mountains of eastern Kentucky would look like.

I have grown quite fond of this little tree.

Once school was out the excitement ramps up as girls come back to shower and get dressed up for dinner with the guys.  A few even go over to the guys dorm a little early to help finish decorating for the event of the evening.  Eventually 5:30 rolls around and all the girls are ready to head to the guys dorm, some excited about the company for dinner and others about the dinner itself.  The evening starts with prayer, worship, and a short story of the history of Thanksgiving.  The guys were perfect gentlement as they let all of the ladies go through line first and have first pick of the prized pieces of turkey.

Janice and EunBin about the enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving dinner.

Natasha was obviously excited about meal.

Sarah being as cute as ever.

Kartini and Alexa put on great smiles for the camera as I akwardly kept them from eating.

Esther showing us her plate of turkey, mashed potatoes,
croissant, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, and dressing.

After dinner the dorm was filled with lots of happy people, some playing music, some playing games, others telling stories and laughing, and all eating some kind of dessert.  One other thing about the night that I really enjoyed was that with the two dorms coming together and a few other guests that came there was quite the crowd.  There were about 40 people sitting and eating Thanksgiving dinner together, which almost felt like home to me.

Oh Fall how I have enjoyed you this evening!!
