Oh it was a glorious night to be a young woman! A night of watching "Little Women" and "Elf" while sipping hot Milo (Indonesia's version of hot chocolate) and sleeping by a radiant Christmas tree in a homemade tent with all of your dorm sisters. Does it get any better?
Well it does if you are a man. But that is another post for another time.
Jennifer and I threw this idea out to the girls because this is something that my sister and I loved to do growing up. The night before Christmas we would sleep on the couches by the tree and sometimes we would end up directly under the tree. Those nights we would drift off to sleep watching the twinkling of the lights and staring up at ornaments of old that reminded us of Christmases past. This is something I wanted to share with the girls... so I did. They thought it was a wonderful idea, especially when the words "slumber" and "party" were thrown in.
Finally the week moseyed on by and it was Friday night. It felt much the way I imagine Santa's workshop would feel. The atmosphere was saturated with the excitement, the laughing, and the anticipation of seven teenage girls plus Jennifer and I. All the girls pulled mattresses out onto the living room floor and made their beds right next to the tree. Esther and Sarah worked hard to perfectly place the chairs and sheets to produce an almost fairy tale like canopy over the beds. Some girls made hot chocolate and others grabbed popcorn while I prepared the movie.
This may be hard to believe but a few of the girls in the dorm had never seen a Christmas movie before! (Personally I never thought I would miss the Hallmark channel so much.) We started with "Little Women", (this is one of Jennifer's favorites so she was hoping for a good review from the girls.) Now those of you who know the story of these "Little Women" know that there is a fairly important part when Laurie asks Jo to marry him and she refuses (sorry if you didn't know the story but were planning to watch it.) It was at this point in the movie that the girls all were completely fed up with Jo, it was also this point in the movie that the DVD decided to stop playing. So now we have seven girls who can't stand Jo and don't even have a chance at a change of heart by seeing how the movie ends. (We've since found another copy- and hope to redeem our "friend" Jo in 2012.)
SO, we did what any parent of unhappy teenagers would do during Christmas, we put on "Elf", which most of them also hadn't seen. It was a hit!
And so the night of the Christmas slumber party came to a close with all the girls safe in their tent and nestled all warm in their beds while visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.

Ok... so I now feel the need to do something manly after writing a post that starts with the line,"Oh it was a glorious night to be a young woman!", consisted of limited synopsis of "Little Women", and mentioned the Hallmark channel. Can you tell I live with 8 women?
